Eric Adams, the New York mayor elect, had vowed to make the Big Apple the center of all things crypto if he were elected. In the midst of his victory hype, he immediately rang true to his word and tried to battle Miami mayor Francis Suarez for the biggest stake in Bitcoin to pay his salary. City comptrollers are in disarray already we guess.

Democrat versus Republicans

Of course it was to be expected that Democrat Adams would immediately try to outdo his Republican counterpart Suarez.

When the Miami mayor claimed that he was:

Going to take my next paycheck 100% in bitcoin, Adams gleefully chimed in, stating: In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!

The Democratic party is of course keen to retake some of this new industry that is attracting interest from young (and thus possible) voters. With China not allowing Bitcoin mining anymore, the industry has moved large portions of its machinery to Texas, which is known as a very Republican state.

If the party of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could therefore attract more crypto companies to settle in New York, which is what the New York mayor-elect wants, it would be good politics. Adams furthermore said in an interview with Bloomberg Radio that he wanted to wager a:

Friendly competition with Suarez. He has a MiamiCoin that is doing very well – we’re going to look in the direction to carry that out.

Just have to settle on a name for that new coin then: are we going BigAppleCoin or NewYorkCoin?
