Bitcoin flash crash and reconstruction of famous Belgian crypto murder

Last Updated on 6 March 2024 by CryptoTips.eu

Bitcoin showed newbie investors what a flash crash is like when it dropped some 10% in a matter of minutes yesterday evening European time (just after it touched its ATH of $69k).

Support was found round the $59k area after which the biggest digital coin was able to trade for more than $60k again.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $66,000.

The reconstruction of the infamous crypto murder took place in Belgium yesterday. Tamara Engels’ ex-boyfriend strangled her with an electric cable in order to steal her crypto fortune.

The case is reminiscent of a similar incident in Seoul during the same period. More and more people are being kidnapped or killed to obtain their crypto wealth.

Seoul and Sint-Niklaas

A similar crypto murder took place in South Korea and Belgium in the first half of 2023. In both cases, women who had made a small fortune investing in digital coins were the victims.

You can read everything about the South Korean case, known as the ‘Gangnam crypto murder’ here.

The re-enactment of the murder of Tamara Engels took place yesterday in Sint-Niklaas, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. She was a 33-year-old bank teller who had invested in crypto very early.

A €400,000 loan

During her relationship with perpetrator A.F., she had already granted him a ‘loan’ of 400,000 euros that she had earned through crypto investments. He spent the money pretty quickly and of course wanted more.

After she broke off the relationship, he still demanded money from her. Her ex-boyfriend and an associate therefore broke into her apartment and strangled her with an electric cable. They took not only her wallet but also a ring and her laptop. The laptop gave access to her crypto accounts containing millions in different currencies.

The trial will start in a few months.
